Node reference · data pulled Oct 26, 2026n8n Gmail node: what the data shows
Sends, replies to, drafts, labels and fetches Gmail messages and threads.
What it does
It covers four resources (messages, drafts, labels and threads) with 26 operations in the current package. It also has a send-and-wait operation that emails someone an approval request and pauses the workflow until they answer. It connects with Google OAuth2 or a service account.
Its strongest partner is the Gmail Trigger (reading new mail, then replying or labelling), and more than half of Gmail templates also touch Google Sheets.
How often public templates use it
3,059 of the 13,574 public templates on n8n.io (22.5%) contain this node, in the snapshot we took on 2026-10-20. The table splits that by the year each template was published. 2026 runs to October 20.
| Year published | Templates with the node | Share of that year |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 48 of 462 | 10.4% |
| 2025 | 1,297 of 6,564 | 19.8% |
| 2026 | 1,697 of 5,845 | 29.0% |
The median template using this node has 114 views on n8n.io, against 284 for all templates. Template counts show what people publish, not what runs in production.
What it is used with
The most frequent partners are the nodes that appear most often in the same templates. "Lift" compares that with the whole library: 2× means the partner turns up twice as often next to this node as in an average template.
| Most frequent partner | Share of its templates | Lift |
|---|---|---|
| Code | 69.3% | 1.17× |
| If | 61.3% | 1.21× |
| Edit Fields (Set) | 58.0% | 1.04× |
| Google Sheets | 54.2% | 1.52× |
| HTTP Request | 42.9% | 0.83× |
| Schedule Trigger | 42.9% | 1.35× |
Strong pairings (in at least 5% of its templates, lift 1.5× or more): 3. The top ones:
| Strong partner | Share of its templates | Lift |
|---|---|---|
| Gmail Trigger | 12.8% | 3.26× |
| Error Trigger | 5.9% | 2.20× |
| Google Sheets | 54.2% | 1.52× |

Known problems
- Footer added to every email. n8n appends an attribution line by default; turn it off in the node options. Source: n8n docs
- Forbidden with a service account. A service account needs to impersonate a user (domain-wide delegation) to act on a mailbox. Source: n8n docs
- 401 Unauthorized. The Gmail API may not be enabled in the Google Cloud project, or delegation is missing. Source: n8n docs
- Reply-To with several addresses. Replies to messages with more than one Reply-To address were fixed in July 2026. Source: n8n PR #34312
- Threaded drafts. An October 2026 fix keeps the References header so drafts created in a thread stay in that thread. Source: n8n PR #41392
- Gmail Trigger in n8n 3.0: old versions run as 1.4. n8n 3.0 (early access since Oct 27, 2026) runs every Gmail Trigger below version 1.4 with the 1.4 behavior: at most 10 emails per poll by default (you can set up to 50, and the rest wait for later polls), drafts are skipped unless you turn on Include Drafts, and sent or scheduled emails that aren't in the inbox no longer start the workflow. We checked our own 24 recipe downloads: 6 start with Gmail Trigger version 1.2. Five poll the inbox every minute, so you will rarely notice. Our order-emails-to-sheet recipe polls once an hour, so if more than 10 order emails land in one hour, raise Max Emails per Poll or the extra ones reach the sheet an hour or more late. Before upgrading, Settings > Migration Report lists the affected nodes. Docs checked Oct 30, 2026. Source: n8n docs
Forum trouble signal: not measured. The n8n community forum's terms forbid automated access, so we don't count forum threads.

Questions
- How many n8n templates use the Gmail node?
- 3,059 of the 13,574 public templates on n8n.io (22.5%), in our snapshot of 2026-10-20.
- What is the Gmail node most often used with?
- Code, which appears in 69.3% of its templates. The most distinctive partner is Gmail Trigger (lift 3.3×).
- Does my Gmail Trigger still work in n8n 3.0?
- Yes, it keeps loading, but versions below 1.4 now behave like 1.4: 10 emails per poll by default (up to 50), no drafts unless Include Drafts is on, and no trigger for sent or scheduled emails outside the inbox. If a busy inbox polls rarely, raise Max Emails per Poll.
- Can n8n wait for an email reply before continuing?
- Yes. The send-and-wait operation emails a question and pauses the workflow until the recipient answers.
- How do I stop n8n adding a footer to emails?
- Turn off the attribution option in the Gmail node's options.
