n8n Webhook node: what the data shows

Starts a workflow when another app or script sends an HTTP request to its URL.

2,676public templates use it (19.7% of 13,574)
51.0%of those also contain an AI node

What it does

Each Webhook node gets a test URL (live only while you click to listen in the editor) and a production URL (live once the workflow is published). You choose the method, path, optional authentication (basic, header or JWT) and whether to reply immediately, at the end, or from a Respond to Webhook node.

Nearly half of Webhook templates also contain Respond to Webhook. That is the pattern for building a small API: receive, process, send a custom reply.

How often public templates use it

2,676 of the 13,574 public templates on n8n.io (19.7%) contain this node, in the snapshot we took on 2026-10-20. The table splits that by the year each template was published. 2026 runs to October 20.

Year publishedTemplates with the nodeShare of that year
202493 of 46220.1%
20251,054 of 6,56416.1%
20261,447 of 5,84524.8%

The median template using this node has 135 views on n8n.io, against 284 for all templates. Template counts show what people publish, not what runs in production.

What it is used with

The most frequent partners are the nodes that appear most often in the same templates. "Lift" compares that with the whole library: 2× means the partner turns up twice as often next to this node as in an average template.

Strong pairings (in at least 5% of its templates, lift 1.5× or more): 4. The top ones:

Versions and changes

Node versions from the npm packages n8n-nodes-base and @n8n/n8n-nodes-langchain, version 2.44.4. New workflows get the default version; workflows built earlier keep the version they were built with until you replace the node.

Merged dates from GitHub. A fix only helps once your n8n instance runs a release that includes it, so check your version.

Known problems

  • Test URL vs production URL. The test URL only works while the editor is listening; outside apps must call the production URL of a published workflow. Source: n8n docs
  • Only one method. A webhook listens to one HTTP method unless you allow multiple methods in its settings. Source: n8n docs
  • One webhook per path and method. Two active workflows can't share the same path and method. Source: n8n docs
  • Timeouts on n8n Cloud. Cloud requests that wait over 100 seconds for a reply get a 524 timeout from Cloudflare; reply early and keep working. Source: n8n docs
  • IP whitelist behind a proxy. Behind a reverse proxy, set N8N_PROXY_HOPS so n8n sees the real client IP. Source: n8n docs
  • CIDR ranges in the whitelist. IP ranges in CIDR form have been matched properly only since December 2025. Source: n8n PR #23399
