What it does

You give it a JSON example or a JSON Schema, and it tells the model to answer in that shape and checks the result. Since mid-2025 it can retry with an auto-fix step when the model's output doesn't match.

It pairs most with the Basic LLM Chain and with Gemini and OpenRouter models.

How often public templates use it

2,181 of the 13,574 public templates on n8n.io (16.1%) contain this node, in the snapshot we took on 2026-10-20. The table splits that by the year each template was published. 2026 runs to October 20.

Year publishedTemplates with the nodeShare of that year
202438 of 4628.2%
20251,166 of 6,56417.8%
2026975 of 5,84516.7%

The median template using this node has 286 views on n8n.io, against 284 for all templates. Template counts show what people publish, not what runs in production.

What it is used with

The most frequent partners are the nodes that appear most often in the same templates. "Lift" compares that with the whole library: 2× means the partner turns up twice as often next to this node as in an average template.

Known problems

  • Unreliable with agents. The docs say parsing is more reliable with a separate LLM chain after the agent than attached to the agent itself. Source: n8n docs
  • Turn on the required format. The parent node must be set to require a specific output format, or the parser isn't used. Source: n8n docs
  • Not for intermediate steps. It shapes the final answer, not an agent's steps in between. Source: n8n docs
  • Objects that don't match. Handling of returned objects that don't fit the schema was fixed in July 2025. Source: n8n PR #17774
