What it does

You build one or more conditions, each typed (string, number, date, boolean, array, object), and join them with AND or OR. Items that pass leave by the true output, the rest by the false output. For more than two routes, Switch is the tidier choice.

Half of public templates contain at least one If node, so it sits next to almost everything at an average rate. Template authors often drop a No Operation node on the branch that should do nothing, so the canvas shows the dead end on purpose; we leave No Operation out of partner counts because it does no work.

Merged dates from GitHub. A fix only helps once your n8n instance runs a release that includes it, so check your version.

Known problems

Both branches run after a Merge. In workflows using the legacy (v0) execution order, a Merge node after If can make both branches execute. n8n 1.0 removed this; check the workflow's execution order setting on old workflows. Source: n8n docs
Missing fields. A 2026 patch changed how the node handles fields that don't exist on an item; conditions on absent fields may evaluate differently across versions. Source: n8n PR #28014
Type mismatch. Conditions are typed. Comparing a number stored as text with a number condition fails unless you convert it or loosen type validation. Source: n8n docs
